Only a hearing health professional can accurately diagnose which specific type or types of hearing loss you are experiencing. Below are three different types of hearing loss
- Sensorineural hearing loss
- Conductive hearing loss
- Mixed hearing loss
Sensorineural hearing loss
This type of hearing loss relates to the inner ear (cochlear) or hearing nerve (neuronal) damage. The inner ear contains tiny hair cells which are responsible for hearing. If the hair cells lose their function, even temporarily, hearing is impaired. Exposure to loud noise, viral infections, and Meniere’s disease can damage the hair cells. Hearing loss due to congenital factors, ototoxic medications or birth injury is sensorineural.
Conductive hearing loss –
Also known as a "conductive loss," a conductive hearing loss occurs in the outer or middle ear. This can be caused by cerumen impaction (ear wax), eustachian tube dysfunction, a perforated eardrum or otosclerosis (a genetic condition that causes the progressive accumulation of bone in the middle ear). This type of hearing loss can often be treated medically or surgically.
Mixed hearing loss –
A mixed hearing loss is a combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. This is often the result of chronic ear infections and certain medications.
No two people are the same. Each individual requires a hearing evaluation to determine their type and degree of hearing loss. Audibles HD System, the first device of its kind, uniquely categorizes hearing loss with three separate levels: mild, moderate and severe, rather than the traditional use of simply ‘low,’ ‘moderate,’ and ‘severe.’ Identifying the specific levels of severity helps patients and their hearing care professionals focus on the level and degree of hearing problems experienced.
